Cherine’s Year
“To have my name featured beside Paul McCartney’s is one of the highlights of my career,” says an excited Cherine Anderson. Anderson, along with Sizzla Kolonji and Lady Saw, is featured on the remix to the former Beatles’ single Nod Your Head, from his latest album Memory Almost Full.
“Sly & Robbie produced it, it’s fun, it’s club and full of vibes, but most importantly it is authentically Jamaican, which is exactly how Mr McCartney wanted it.” Although Anderson was not afforded the opportunity to record in studio with McCartney, she remains ecstatic about her accomplishment. “I’ve received a lot of positive feedback from working on the remix and feel very privileged to have legendary musicians like Sly & Robbie trust in my talents to deliver on a project of this magnitude.”
The McCartney remix is, however, one in a slew of accomplishments that the artiste has achieved for the year. Cherine, known to many as the star of Jamaican indie film One Love and her breakthrough role as the character of the daughter to a woman trying to find a creative way out of poverty in the movie Dancehall Queen, currently showcases her acting chops in MTV Tempo’s interactive television drama Choices. Being on production sets for much of her life, Anderson, this year, dabbled in video direction for her song Kingston State of Mind. She is also recording the remix for the previously mentioned single with ‘Haitian sensation’ and Fugee, Wyclef Jean. “Clef is such a big supporter of Cherine Anderson, I have known him for years and he is a big fan of Dancehall Queen. Our relationship (musical) is nothing forced, I can always call him and ask for advice when I need it,” states Anderson of Jean.
Another major highlight for the year, included, while opening and performing alongside Jean in Tortola, BVI in the summer of 2007, the opportunity to meet former African reggae artiste, Lucky Dube, at one of his last appearances in the Caribbean before his death. “He was so cool, and down to earth,” expresses Anderson of her encounter with Dube.
With the release of her new video for the single You And Me Against The World slated for release in a matter of two weeks, Anderson relishes in her accomplishments but doesn’t for a second take anything for granted. “Not many get the opportunity to do what they love to do so I am lucky and give thanks for that,” explains Anderson. What’s next for Cherine? Having brought the house down with a stunning performance at Michael Bolton’s One Night Only, a happy Cherine says, “I am going to be trying to finish my album and also establishing the brand dancehall soul. I have a lot of shows coming up for the season, and will be touring with Sly & Robbie in 2008.” Sounding somewhat grateful she continues, “I am just going to continue doing what I am doing, taking it day by day, and giving thanks all the way.”
